News 11/01/09:
- New SGA recs:
- The Fall of the House of Sheppard by Martha/saffronhouse (NC-17, 40,150 words)
- Summary: John Sheppard's strange inheritance has drawn Dr. Rodney McKay across two galaxies and back again. Now Dr. McKay must survive the dark forces at work in the Sheppard house to save the man he loves!
- Review: The summary is cheesy, but the fic isn't. And it does scary/creepy extremely well, gah!
- Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead by Speranza ([NC-17], 12,033 words)
- Summary: The symphony. Football. Shopping. But not Mexican food.
- Review: Speranza is one of my favourite SGA authors. She does narration so well.
- New vid recs:
- One-Night Fandoms: A Tribute to Yuletide by eruthros and thingswithwings (Multifandom, 59MB, .avi)
- Review: I am not a Yuletider - not even a consumer. That is, except for the rare instances that I am, after all. But I still like the concept, and am in awe of the outpouring of fics and recs every year. The diversity and love of Yuletide comes across clearly in this vid. I can't really pick out favourite bits - every time I recognize a fandom, I squee :oD
News 28/09/08:
- New SGA recs:
- General & Dr Sheppard by Xanthe (NC-17, 118,866 words)
- Summary: An accident with Ancient technology sucks a John and Rodney from an alternate universe onto Atlantis – and they have very different ideas about sex, marriage and relationships.
- Review: Guilty-pleasure fic - hot BDSM & great emo-porn :o)
- Kid A by Speranza ([NC-17], 7,899 words)
- Summary: "I'm not gay, Rodney," John says, and it's awkward to have to say it, but it really has to be said.
- Review: Don't worry, the fic has nothing to do with kids. This is the kind of fic that I can never remember what was about from the title. So in a way it's forgettable, which is a rather anti-reccy thing to say. However, it does win me over every time, and the ending leaves me very happy.
- New vid recs (will I ever get all my vid recs up, before I tire of fandom??):
- Absolutely Cuckoo by zoetrope (Rodney/John, 5MB, .wmv, YouTube)
- Review: Whoa, have I fallen behind? Are all fandoms producing kick-ass brilliant multimedia vids the way SGA is??
- Favorite clips: The animation! "Think about John", "Miss John", hee. Dictionary definitions! Mmm, Rodney's ass in boxer briefs. "Alright, alright, I'm going!", "Good riddance!", hahaha.
- Another Sunday by jescaflowne (Stargate: Atlantis!, 41MB, .avi) !
- Review: I love this vid. I love every last one of its cheesy and deliberately over-the-top effects. Which aren't cheesy or over-the-top at all, they're perfect. My, John and Ronon are pretty men. Great, awesome timing.
- Favorite clips: The intro! Carson slapping Rodney's arm on the beat at 0:49. John being kick-ass. Teyla being kick-ass. Ronon being kick-ass. Rodney/pointing sequence at 2:13. John's face and the effect at 3:53 - and wraithqueen lip-synching! Repeated Ronon-sequence at 4:00. Posse!walk makes me HAPPY IN MY BRAIN <3 !!
News later in the day on 26/09/08:
- More new SGA recs, sorry for the spam:
- The Experiment by Luna/lunasky (NC-17, 22,211 words)
- Summary: They wake up to find themselves in a grey room. A plain, grey room with no windows or doors.
- Review: This worked very well for me.
- Failsafes by Luna/lunasky (PG-13, ca. 15,500 words)
- Summary: The city was full of failsafes.
- Review: Very intriguing, a rollercoaster of a read.
- Oblivious by astolat ([NC-17], 8,240 words)
- Summary: In which Rodney and John fail to pay attention.
- Review: I love a good comedy of errors :o)
- Proof by Devil Doll (R, ca. 5,700 words)
- Summary: "We had a fight and he dumped me."
- Review: Oh, John - you dork <3 !
- Small Primes and Square Roots by Livia ([R], ca. 17,500 words, AR)
- Summary: "I hope you picked someone really intelligent, otherwise it seems like it would be kind of a waste. Of incubation time, if nothing else."
- Review: The ending is rushed, which is sad, as the rest is quite excellent.
News 26/09/08:
- New SGA recs:
- The Dark Side by astolat ([PG-13], 7,432 words, AR)
- Summary: "You're not a very good Jedi, are you?" the Sith Lord said.
"Oh, excuse me, I am an excellent Jedi," Rodney said.
- Review: This worked for me in all the right ways. In fact, for about a week I was downright obsessed with this verse! (That manip of John, nnnngh!)
- A Hundred Happy Things by busaikko (NC-17, ca. 33,000 words, AR)
- Summary: Harlequin AU (no Stargate). Kaleb's long gone, Jeannie's got a career, Madison has problems, Rodney's got Inner Power!, and Sheppard … is pretty much the same.
- Review: This worked way better than I thought it would. Well-written, great characterizations, and a good read.
- Junk Cheap by Devil Doll (R, ca. 13,000 words, AR)
- Summary: If you were thinking you'd love to read an AU where Rodney is a college professor and John owns a junk shop, this is the story for you.
- Review: I was just thinking I'd like to read such a fic!
- Unidentified by the drifter/fiercelydreamed (PG-13, ca. 30,000 words, AR)
- Summary: Fourteen years, eight months, and seven days after John and Rodney meet, the clock starts all over again.
- Review: It almost lost me at the first flashback, because I'm weird about flashbacks, but I carried on, and it was a very good read. And it has my fave Sheppard/McKay fic!kink <3
- Whipping Boy by Kat Reitz and Perryvic ([NC-17], 107,370 words, AR)
- Summary: There were regulars to the infirmary. The 'whipping boys' -- smart, every bloody last one of them, to be there at NIT -- with their caning marks laid hard across their shoulders and upper backs, fresh and scarred alike. He had a supply of self dissolving sutures for them, and well worn advice on how to deal with Patrons who weren’t getting the point of the arrangement.
- Review: Ah, kink!/id-votex!fic, *settles in*.
News 24/08/08:
- Whoa, I think I've gone about as minimalist as I'm ever going to go, layout-wise. Next layout will have Flash, background images, you name it.
- Apart from fandom-stalker Ender, I doubt anyone reads these. So I was going to delete the older news. Except that made me sad. So I put them in an archive instead.
- I was going to post about Safesurf/ICRA/etc. ratings - mostly to determine whether I still need them/both. But I just found out ICRA isn't using PICS anymore, so the label I have probably isn't even working. Out with it; can always add back.
- 2 new Vid recs:
- The Glass by thingswithwings (multifandom, 44MB, .avi, imeem)
- Review: This is a visualization of Henry Jenkins' short definition of slash, referring to the famous scene at the end of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan:
slash is what happens when you take away the glass.
- Favorite clips: Glass breaking at 0:44. Fraser/RayK <3 ! Goodness, John Barrowman is a pretty, pretty man, isn't he. The dedication at the end of the vid.
- Strip by Ferd (multifandom, 32MB, .divx, YouTube)
- Review: I love vids that get better and better with subsequent viewings. Good timing and good - what do you call it when movement in one clip is carried through to/in the next? I love how many fandoms/sources are represented, and I love the joy for movies and vidding that comes across. I find this utterly charming.
- Favorite clips: All the pretty dresses <3 ! Appearences by Disney characters and muppets - and Yoda! Twirling sequences!!
News 10/08/08:
- I've added a bunch of "Leave a comment" links around the website. Hopefully it's clear that people can leave a comment on the rec/site, not the fics recced.
- I don't know what I was thinking setting up several rss feeds (well, mostly that I'd learn how to, so ok), because I'm obviously not getting anywhere near enough recs up for it to be worthwhile. So am discontinuing ds, spn, and vid feeds. Also because I doubt anyone is subscribing to them. Should there be anyone subscribing to them, and wanting them to continue, feel free to give a shout!
- SGA Recs have their own page now, and I put up a whole bunch of them.
- 1 new DS rec:
- Adorned by Resonant (NC-17, 7,006 words)
- Summary: Ray thinks about making a mark.
- Review: My personal favourite of Resonant's DS fics. It is so very lovely and good.
- Minor adjustments to site layout as per usual.
News 06/06/08:
- SPN recs updates.
- Added SGA Sheppard/McKay recs to Various Fandoms Recs:
- Decreasing Radii by cathalin (NC-17, ca. 27,000 words)
- Summary: Sometimes the only thing to do is to steepen the bank, lean further into the turn.
- Review: You can't go wrong with a good Aliens Made Them Do It :oD
- Intersections by Kaneko ([NC-17], 24,391 words) !
- Summary: Rodney's Antarctica is a lot like Siberia in that it's full of scientists who work 16-hour days and bathe once a week (twice when they're feeling social).
- Review: I just finished reading this, and I loved it. Love the writing, the narration, and the characterization. My favourite SGA fic yet.
- The Soul and the Company Store Remix by Leah (R, 46,558 words)
- Summary: "I think it's time you told me why the bloody hell you have Lee and Zelenka's missing SX-7 on your bed."
- Review: Robot!fic, *facepalms*. Really good, enjoyed it immensely, loved the resolution.
News 21/04/08:
- Pretty, transparent favicon by Snakeling - thank you, *smooch*!!
- Have set up rss feeds for site updates (will e.g. link to all new recs, though not directly to the fics like the individual recs feeds), DS recs updates (3 new recs), SPN recs updates (1 new rec), and vid recs updates. Rss is fun, whee!
News 13/01/08:
- Added a few DS recs, SPN recs, and vid recs.
- Fiddled with the css and positioning of banner/buttons and a couple other minor things. I think I have finally mastered
float
! Yeah, I don't know what took me so long, either.
News 23/09/07:
- Integrated HP drabble recs with the other HP recs. I will slowly (slooowly) be adding word-count to HP recs.
- Changed file-names of HP recs (hp.html) and Clex recs (sv.html) - bad, I know, but I've been wanting to for a long time.
- Added RPS recs (mostly Jared/Jensen). I'm going to try adding SPN and DS recs a couple at a time - thinking about sorting through my list of bookmarks and formatting everything at once is too overwhelming. We'll see if it works better this way…
